Advice on pet-proofing holiday parties
Family gatherings, holidays and at-home get-togethers can be fun ways to spend time with loved ones. But they can sometimes be stressful occasions for furry friends.Try these simple tips for holding pet-safe events.
•Petproof decor. When decorating for a get-together, check that the wall hangings and other decorations are well out of reach of curious pets. Also, remember that certain common plants, including rosary pea, holly and morning glory, are toxic to animals. Be sure to keep them out of Fido's or Fluffy's reach.
•Cleanliness counts. Everyone wants a clean house when hosting parties, but with excess pet hair on couches and chairs, guests will be less than impressed. Brush pets regularly to decrease shedding and keep the fur off guests. Also brush or vacuum pet hair off furniture and the floor before guests arrive. Clean the litter box, and move pet toys and food dishes to a room not used by guests to prevent smells lingering in the air.
•Keep an eye on gifts. If guests bring presents, remember dogs and cats have an elevated sense of smell and may be tempted to open scented items. Perfumes and gourmet food gifts could cause harm if their non-pet-friendly contents are consumed. Place these types of items in an area pets can't reach. Also, keep batteries, which can be toxic and cause intestinal obstruction, in a safe place until they are ready to be used.
•Watch the wrapping. Don't use wrapping paper as a play toy. According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association, more than half of dog owners will buy a gift for their pet this year. Discourage pets from playing with the wrapping by removing all ribbons and bows. These items can be harmful if swallowed and could cause intestinal obstruction.
•Consistency is key. Maintain consistent diets for pets. Keeping a pet's diet as consistent and regular as possible will help him maintain a normal routine, avoid feeling stressed and lessen your chance for a trip to the veterinarian. Consider giving a pooch a healthy snack filled with Omega3 and Omega-6 fatty acids; they also help reduce shedding by supporting a healthy skin and coat.
•Practice proper pet etiquette. While owners may consider their pet a part of the family, their guests might not agree. Find out what allergies guests may have prior to parties, as well as any other pet-related issues. Be sure to designate a room or contained area specifically for pets when guests are present. If guests have young children, make sure the children understand how to behave around pets and remember to keep an extra-close eye on both pets and children.
•Save time to be with pets. Changes in the environment and unusual activity can create anxiety and tension in animals. Take a break from the party or party planning to spend quality time with a pet. Consider taking a walk, playing in the yard, or grooming to bond.
