Can't stomach new healthy food laws

2007-12-14 / Letters

In the past, lunchtime at school was an enjoyable time when kids could purchase their favorite foods if they had the money. Current rules have been passed to limit foods that carry too much fat or calories on school menus.

What we are left with are less desirable foods that no kid wants to purchase. Soda and candy can no longer be sold to students, as well as fast food for special occasions.

Our school used to be able to have activity days where foods from various restaurants could be purchased and students could have a good time, but now the governor has passed a series of rules to prohibit these foods from entering schools. No longer can we have these tasty treats in school.

These new rules are meant to prevent obesity in youth; this is a good concept, but they haven't taken into consideration the other students now being restricted. Obese kids got that way from their own poor eating habits or other various reasons.

These new rules will not change the way kids choose to eat or stay healthy. Calvin Whitters Simi Valley
