SEBASTIAN RAMIREZ/Acorn Newspapers GRIM FIND- Firefighters wrap up work after putting out a fire last Wednesday at a home in the 1200 block of Patricia Avenue. Inside the locked house investigators found the body of a woman in the kitchen. Fire investigators and the coroner have classified Karrie Bragg's death as accidental. A local woman is dead after a fire burned the interior of her 800squarefoot home on Patricia Avenue last week.

Firefighters said the cause of the fire that killed 50-year-old Karrie Bragg is still under investigation, but that it started in the kitchen.

Captain Barry Parker of the Ventura County Fire Department said that fire crew arrived at the 1200 block of Patricia Avenue at about 5 p.m. Nov. 21. The kitchen fire was contained by 5:15 p.m. and completely out by 5:30 p.m.

Sgt. David Livingstone of the Simi Valley Police Department said Bragg's death is not being investigated as a homicide, which the coroner's office confirmed. Craig Stevens, an investigator with the county's medical examiner-coroner's office, said Bragg died of asphyxia by inhalation of smoke and carbon monoxide and that her death was accidental.

"There was a smoke detector present," said Parker. "But we don't believe it was working. We don't believe it alerted the occupant."

When crews arrived, Parker said, there was heavy black smoke present and the front door was locked.

Bragg was found dead in the kitchen where the fire was mostly contained.

Parker emphasized that they weren't sure of the cause of the fire, but that it could've started if Bragg was trying to warm the house with the oven. The investigation will continue.
