Simi’s philosophy discussion group is timely and free I’ve been both intrigued and put off by the distinguished speaker series at the T.O. Arts Plaza: worldclass speakers but at very high prices. Accordingly, I was delighted to find a similar series in Simi that is both monthly and free. The Language and Philosophy of Peace discussion group is timely to say the least. Past topics have included Women, Islam, and Peace; China and Peace; Physics and Peace; How Humor Might Affect World Peace; and, memorably, in December, Intelligent Design, Evolution, and Peace. Following a presentation, the audience gets involved in a group discussion and, unlike at the Thousand Oaks presentations, can mingle afterwards with the speaker. Launched in spring 2005 as a reading and media discussion group, it’s organized and led by Chris and Nancy Redgate and friends, local articulate luminaries with boundless curiosity and a seemingly inexhaustible ability to tap well-credentialed speakers. While the general public is the intended audience, the meetings have consistently attracted educators, students, philosophers, authors, attorneys and doctors of all disciplines. The format starts with a 25-minute presentation followed by an often heated discussion. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the public room at the Simi Valley Library. I arrive earlier so I can grab a seat. The event is free. No donations are requested or accepted. Emerald Jones Newbury Park |
