Council members get a raise
     The Simi Valley City Council voted 4-0 Monday to give itself a 10 percent pay hike, raising council members' salaries from $1,055 per month to $1,160. Councilmember Barbra Williamson was not in attendance due to illness.

     While most local high school students have been playing video games and going to movies like "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" this summer, 15year-old Douglas Newbill spent two weeks last month sailing 2,100 nautical miles in the Pacific Ocean.
