Let’s work together to give Simi Valley a sense of communit Some people in Simi Valley have told us privately that too many city residents lack a sense of “community.” Although nobody wants to blame anyone, the consensus is that Simi Valley is a bedroom community in which many people choose to remain uninvolved. The attitude seems to be: “I work hard for a living in L.A., but when I get home to Simi Valley, I value my privacy and anonymity.” Simi Valley has a conscientious city staff and council, effective civil servants—particularly on the fire and police departments. The park district is second to none. The city has plenty of stores and service industries, a new mall and a beautiful library. It has award-winning schools. There’s a top-notch Boys & Girls Club. There are abundant programs available for senior citizens. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities and service clubs. There are churches, temples, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, a teen center, a hospital and a clinic that offers free or low-cost medical services. A perception also lingers, however, that Simi Valley is a city divided. Like those who think there should be two Californias—North and South—some residents seem to think there’s an East and West Simi Valley. If so, that’s a shame. Even if there are distinct differences between the older neighborhoods and the newer and more affluent Westside, it’s unhealthy to embrace the contrasts. Simi Valley will do better if residents stop thinking in a “them vs. us” mentality. Simi Valley is one city, united by its city government and school district, its police and fire departments, its parks, chamber of commerce and other services. We encourage the citizens of Simi Valley to work together and strive to give the city a united sense of identity. Even if you do nothing more than share an occasional greeting with your next door neighbor, you’ll be helping spread a sense of community. It’s a wonderful city to live in or to work in. So please share with others your sense of joy about living in Simi Valley instead of keeping it a secret. |
