Historical Societlikes ‘Simi firsts On behalf of Simi Valley Historical Society, I’d like to thank the Simi Valley Acorn for delving into our city’s interesting past (“Simi Valley ‘firsts,’” Feb. 3). Our city is home to many founding families, but also to thousands of newer residents who know little about our city’s colorful history. The Strathearn Park and Museum is the best place to learn about early days in our beautiful valley. I’d like to invite everyone to step back in time and take a stroll through Simi Valley’s past. Many of our city’s earliest structures are in the park: the Simi Adobe from 1795 and the Strathearn Home, which was built onto the Simi Adobe in 1892. A colony house from 1888 can be toured, as well as the first library and a wood ranch barn. The original St. Rose of Lima Church is nearing the final stages of restoration. The buildings are all furnished from their time, so you truly feel the time-machine effect. The park is the site of numerous other buildings, barns, general store/gift shop and machinery, as well as thousands of museum artifacts from Simi Valley’s early years. Anyone interested in learning more about Simi’s legacy should consider the following: We actively seek participation from the community for our docent organization. Docent hours are flexible, requiring only a minimum of one day a month. All ages are welcome to apply. Volunteers are trained during four evening classes. Reservations are now being accepted for Feb. 21, 23, 28 and March 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. Call Karla Hubbell at (818) 388-3301. Location: 137 Strathearn Place. Guided tours weekends from 1 to 4 p.m., plus Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. Museum office hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (805) 526-6453.
