Scott Butler Scott Butler Scott Butler, 18, was presented his Eagle Scout Award during a ceremony held Sept. 25 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Simi Valley.

Butler, a 2006 graduate of Royal High School, is a member of Simi Troop 698. His Eagle Scout project consisted of constructing an octagon planter around one of the large ash trees that sits in the middle of the Simi Valley High School quad.

The planter was made from several six-foot wooden beams and was filled with tree bark and mulch.

Steve Pietrolungo, principal at SVHS, said the planter was a welcome addition to the school.

"He did a wonderful job," Pietrolungo said. "It just gives the area a cleaner, crisper look."

Helping Butler, who first joined the Boy Scouts in 2001, with his project were Jamie Garritsen and his son, Broc, along with several other members of Troop 698. Donations were made by Dr. James Seino and by Lowe's Home Improvement.

Butler, who has decided to enroll in the United States Marine Corps, is the son of Fred and Lois Butler of Simi Valley.
