Last week, the Simi Valley High School Pioneers celebrated an event 39 years in the making.

Friday's game marked the first time the team played on a new home field since 1967.

Improvements to Bob Jacob Memorial Stadium, named after a late Simi Valley High School principal, include an Atlas brand artificial track and a Sprint turf artificial field. The new field eliminates the need for any watering or upkeep.

"I think our kids work hard in and out of the classroom. Our student athletes combined have over a 3.0 GPA, and now they have a first class stadium to compete in," said Mark LaBelle, Simi Valley High School's athletic director.

The opening of the new Bob Jacob Memorial Stadium was marked by a celebration attended by over 200 people. A number of dignitaries were present, including city council members, school board members, alumni and faculty. A special flag donated by Congress was flown over the stadium

"Mrs. Ruth Jacob, wife of the late Bob Jacob, cut the ribbon along with 20 student representatives from the various athletic and student clubs/organizations and Simi won the game," said principal Steve Pietrolungo.

The ceremonies also included music from the award winning Pioneer marching band.

The renovations cost $1.8 million and were paid for with funds from the C4 bond measure, according to district officials.

"The students and alumni are all excited about the new facility and can't wait to use it," Pietrolungo said.

The school plans on renovating the bleachers during the next phase of construction.

"Everyone will be able to take advantage of the new facility, from the kids playing sports to those participating in PE classes," LaBelle said. "The best part of the project is the fact that the entire community came together to support us. Our student-athletes, staff and administration are extremely grateful for their support."

And by the way, the Pioneers won their home opener, 20-14, over visiting Pacifica High School.
