Active adults in Simi Valley will cheer or be cheered on in the upcoming Age 50-Plus Community Games, hosted by the Simi Valley Senior Center and presented by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks District and the city of Simi Valley.

The first-time event is being coordinated by Stan Kalsman, recreation coordinator for the park district and the senior center. He shares the job with his wife, Karen Kalsman, and Sue McElvogue.

"This is not a competitive thing," Kalsman said. "I want all athletes of all skill levels to come out. This is to have fun."

The games will be held Oct.12 through 15, with an opening ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. Registration for the events is from Sept. 5 to Oct. 4, and entry-form packets are available at the senior center.

Participation in the event is free, and all entrants will receive a Tshirt. Events include golf, pickleball (a form of paddle tennis), horseshoes, basketball shooting, bunco, bingo, poker, eight-ball pool, shuffleboard and a one-mile walk.

Clinics are available for those events that might be unfamiliar to entrants. Events will have competitive, noncompetitive and age divisions. Attendance is open to the public at no charge.

Robert Nelson is one local adult who said he'll be taking part in the event.

"I'm (participating) because it's free. It's the right price for me," he said, laughing.

Nelson said he'll be competing in the horseshoe throwing event as well as several others.

"The senior center and the community games give you a good chance to do things you haven't done in a while because of a busy schedule. Once you retire, you have the time to do all the things you wanted to do while you were working," Nelson said.

The senior center has long offered recreational programs for citizens age 50 and up, according to Kalsman. The programs center around maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle even into one's later years.

Programs are held at various locations around Simi Valley in addition to the senior center, such as Rancho Simi Park, the Boys & Girls Club and Sinaloa Golf Course.
