Young entrepreneurs aim to light up the Simi night life
GIVING SIMI'S YOUNG ADULTS SOMETHING TO DO-The faces behind Digital Elegance Promotions: from left, Tim Munz, Casey Murphy, Randy James and Dustin Riggers. The group formed the company in early July to promote live entertainment locally. The partners in Digital Elegance Promotions have big ideas and big plans. If energy and enthusiasm count, then their fledging business should be a wild success.
"Simi Valley doesn't have anything for our age group except drinking if you're over 21," said 22year-old Timothy Munz. "You have to travel to Hollywood or other places. We want to bring bands and comedy shows to this area."
Two months ago, Munz and his friend Randy James, 22, were kicking around ideas for starting a business. James produced videos for underground musicians on public access TV and that interest led to promotions.
"We were going to call ourselves digital 'productions' but it was too vague and limited," James said. "We changed it to 'promotions' and that gave us more venues and outlets."
The young men are eager to jump-start business careers that allow them to avoid the typical grind.
"What's the point of working a 9 to 5 job? We're trying to get out of that race," James said. "If we're smart enough to start our own company, why not go for it?"
After Dustin Riggers and Casey Murphy, both 22, joined the team, Digital Elegance began to make its presence known in the area. "Simi Valley first, and then the world" seems to sum up the direction the guys are taking.
The partners met off-roading and through mutual friends. They went to different high schools, but now live in the Simi Valley/ Moorpark area.
And although they came together with the same dream, they have their feet solidly on the ground.
"We want to help out small businesses who are trying to survive and pay their bills," Munz said.
The promo team studied marketing techniques and started networking both locally and in Los Angeles. Their Myspace blog gets the word out on upcoming events, and the young entrepreneurs are attracting a multitude of talent.
Already the team has signed on four steady clients and has promoted bands and comedy shows.
One such venue is Carpe DM, a newly opened bar and nightclub tucked in a shopping mall in the 5700 block of Los Angeles Avenue. The club has undergone extensive renovation and offers live bands and a cool place to hang out. When owner Joshua Wright wanted to promote events at the club, he called on the Digital Elegance team.
"They really work hard at what they do," said Wright, 29. "We're all young and anybody who works hard to achieve a common goal I'm willing to give a chance."
Events at Carpe DM include live blues bands at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday starting Sept. 12.
While holding down day jobs from sales to construction, the partners work at building the business. In August they successfully promoted "The XXX Nasty Comedy Show" at the Laff Factory in Los Angeles and then booked a gig for the show's host, comedian KC Armstrong.
When Armstrong needed a venue to try out some new material, the guys arranged a show at The Beach in Simi Valley.
"We got 100 people there in three hours," Munz said. "We set everything up and the venue tripled its income that night."
As for titles in this business model, you won't find any stodgy ones like CEO or president. Currently, the boardroom is at Starbucks, on the telephone or, as Munz points a finger, right inside his head.
"We all really have a role at the company," James said. "I open up the clients and get the ball rolling."
While James is committed to the new venue, he'd still like to attend college.
"I want to go back for general eds, but I can't go back until I get my life straight," he said.
Munz is married and his son, Timothy Jr., turns 1 this month. According to his buddies, Munz is the man to go to if you want something done quickly.
Riggers performs in heavy metal bands and plays several instruments. Dubbed "the music man," Riggers talks the lingo with bands Digital Elegance promotes.
"Most of the bands I work with, I have a good idea what kind of a turnout they bring into the place," he said. "I communicate between them and make everyone happy."
When it comes to signing contracts, Murphy is "the business guy." Murphy recently earned an associate's degree in business at Moorpark College.
"We want to be the name brand that people go to when they need a show or activity promoted, especially in Simi," said Murphy.
