Cabrillo Theatre announces new musical season
Cabrillo Music Theatre, the resident musical theatre company of the Countrywide Performing Arts Center at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, has announces its 2006-07 season.
Cabrillo will open its season with "A Chorus Line," performed from Oct. 27 to Nov. 5 in the Fred Kavli Theatre. The show will feature the original Tony Award-winning staging of Michael Bennett.
"We are fortunate to have the nationally renowned talents of Kay Cole to direct and choreograph our production. Kay originated the role of 'Maggie' in the original Broadway production," said Carole Nussbaum, Cabrillo's president and CEO. "A Chorus Line" is the story of a chorus audition for a Broadway musical. It reveals the high hopes of an eclectic group of young Broadway gypsies seeking to land a job in the show.
"It is a brilliantly designed fusion of dance, song and compellingly authentic drama," said Nussbaum. "Cabrillo Music Theatre's 'Broadway in Your Backyard' brings 'A Chorus Line' to the stage just weeks after it opens again on Broadway."
Due to the explicit language of the play, the show is recommended for mature audiences.
From March 23 to April 1, 2007 Cabrillo will present "Smokey Joe's Café," Broadway's longest running musical revue, which showcases the work of rock legends Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller.
"Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded, the show includes the classic themes of love and real life emotions," said Nussbaum. "Musical hits include 'Yakety Yak,' 'Jailhouse Rock,' 'On Broadway,' 'Spanish Harlem,' 'Stand By Me' and 'Love Potion No. 9.' This ever-hip production shall be directed by the talented Paul David Bryant."
The 2006-07 season finale is "Beauty and the Beast" scheduled for performances from July 27 to Aug. 5, 2007.
"Our gem of a summer production will gloriously fill the stage. The theatrical version of Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' goes beyond children's entertainment. It is a heartwarming love
story, which charms audiences of all ages," according to Nussbaum.
Based on the Academy Awardwinning animated feature, Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" includes all the songs from the film, written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman.
It also includes the new songs created especially for the Broadway version by Menken and Tim Rice. Nussbaum invites parents and their children to step into the enchanted world of Belle, her father Maurice, the Beast, Mrs. Potts, Lefou and many other colorful characters. This Tony Award-winning production will be directed by Cabrillo's artistic director, Lewis Wilkenfeld.
