Get home modification ideas for independent senior living

The Simi Valley Council for Senior Housing and Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District are hosting free events for seniors, their family members, caregivers and anyone interesting in learning how to remove barriers in independent living. These are not sales presentations, but informational sessions where participants can learn how to make home modifications to benefit seniors.

Home Modifications-Crisis Management will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tues., Sept. 12 in Room 107 at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi. Presenters will be Paul Furtaw of Home Remedies and John Parker of Specialty.

Furtaw will share many do-ityourself ideas and professional installations during his slide presentation that covers handrails, furniture, ramps, doorways, shower/ tub, and other home modifications.

Remodeling or Choosing New Housing for Aging-in-Place- Planning Ahead will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tues., Sept. 19 in Multipurpose Room B at Rancho Santa Susana Community Center, 5005C Los Angeles Ave.

Kevin O'Connor, a certified interior designer, will show a pictorial review of universal design and other supportive housing features for multigenerational households or those with people with physical limitations.
