Truck delivering food to school takes out power
The few pupils at Simi Valley's Park View Elementary this summer still got their lunches Wednesday after the man driving their food delivery truck clipped a cable television line just across the street from his destination.
According to police reports, the driver plowed through the line hanging across Alexander Street in front of the school, causing two nearby power poles to break and several power and cable television lines to fall. The crash, which occurred at about 10 a.m. at Alexander and Callahan streets, ignited four separate fires.
The small blazes resulted in damage to one house and several trees.
Only a small number of preschool and pre-kindergarten kids were on campus, in addition to staff and faculty. According to police , no one at the school was in danger.
"He was just bringing some things to the kitchen," said Martha
Dinovo, office manager at Park View. "Trucks go in and out of there all the time and nothing like this has ever happened before. But it was no big deal. It was across the street."
The power line damage, however, resulted in a power outage at the school until early Thursday morning. The outage also affected more than 2,600 customers between East Los Angeles Avenue and the Ronald Reagan Freeway.
"Some of the power went right back up at 10:21 a.m. Wednesday, but everything was back by 4:30 a.m. (Thursday) morning," said Paul Klein, spokesperson for Southern California Edison. "The job required replacement of the poles, they were damaged so badly. That's why it took so long to get it back on."
The crash is under investigation by the Simi Valley Police Department's Traffic Unit.
