Senior center offers profile of cathedral artist Nava
Donna Granata, founder and executive director of Focus on the Masters, will present a seminar, "Decorating a Cathedral: The Art of John Nava," from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wed., Aug. 30 at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi in Simi Valley.
The cost is $5 per person.
According to event organizers, "the realism of John Nava's paintings stun the viewer while his mastery of light and shadow is reminiscent of Old Master paintings."
In 1999, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles commissioned Nava to create a series of large-scale tapestries for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.
The tapestries are considered one of the most important art commissions of the 21st Century. Granata's lecture will discuss the evolution of the artist's most celebrated commissions.
The seminar is sponsored by the Simi Valley Lifelong Learning Institute, a joint project of the Ventura County Community College district and the city of Simi Valley, which offers extended learning options for adults.
To register for the seminar, call the Ventura College Community Education office at (805) 6546459. For more information, call (805) 583-6363.
