Tips to avoid overheating
Recent temperatures in Ventura County have peaked at more than 100 degrees and along with high humidity.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity may create a dangerous situation, causing heat-related illness.
Children and the elderly are most susceptible to heat stroke.
No person or pet should ever stay in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short amount of time. Temperatures in vehicles quickly rise to life-threatening levels, even if the windows are partially open.
Following are ways to prevent heat-related illness: +Drink plenty of water and nonalcoholic fluids. +Eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods such as fruits or salad.
+Stay in an air-conditioned room or building. +Stay out of the sun. +Use portable electric fans to exhaust hot air from rooms or draw in cooler air. +Take a cool bath or shower. +Wear loose fitting, lightcolored clothing. +Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles for any amount of time. +Check on relatives and neighbors, especially homebound elderly. +Know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate response in case of emergency.
