Calls into question Pavley's proposed cellphone regulation
In your July 7 issue of the Simi Valley Acorn, you published a story about Assemblymember Fran Pavley and her bill requiring cellphone vendors to recycle cellphones.
She said, "Not only is this a burden on landfill space, but cellphones contain hazardous materials which, if improperly disposed of, can leak out and contaminate soil and groundwater."
It's stupid comments and ideas like that that place a ridiculous burden on the United States government for having to regulate useless legislation like this.
Cellphones cannot leak and contaminate soil and groundwater in landfills because of the way that landfills are constructed.
Measures are put into place to prevent any kind of toxic leakage into the soil and groundwater.Furthermore, we're not running out of landfill space, which makes this bill absolutely useless.Does Pavley really have nothing better to do? I'm sure I'm not the only one who has grown tired of legislators who support or create bills to further complicate an already ineffective and fully subsidized recycling effort.
According to the July 7 article, the Assembly bill "requires any business selling cellphones to take back and recycle old phones at no cost to the consumer."
Yes, at no cost to the consumer, and at no financial benefit to the business or the consumer. This is just a waste of time that costs money and consumes energy for absolutely no good reason at all.
Fran Pavley needs to study up on landfill safety. She also needs to ask herself why recycling costs more money and consumes more energy than it saves.
She also needs to give up on the ridiculous notion that we're running out of landfill space.
I am required to pay for numerous pointless recycling programs as well as Fran Pavley's salary?Another legislator on a mission to spend my money on herself and her foolish ideas. Michael Chandler Simi Valley
