Keep pets home during fireworks

2006-06-30 / Pets

People enjoy fireworks displays, but the loud noises and bright lights often terrify dogs and cats. To avoid stressing pets, leave animals at home whenever fireworks are used. A frightened pet might bolt and run away into the crowd during a public fireworks show.

For residents who live close to public fireworks shows or will be using legal pyrotechnics at home, keep animals indoors during the

event. Close the doors and windows to help muffle the noise. Avoid putting animals in cages, because a scared pet will scratch and gnaw on the door, which can result in bloody paws or broken teeth.

Pet owners may also consider temporarily taking their dogs or cats to a friend's or relative's house away from the fireworks site.

Keep yourself and your pets safe during this Fourth of July.
