Learn tales of the rails at Santa Susana
Through displays and a largescale railroad diorama, the historic Santa Susana Railroad Depot and Museum recreates what many people of the 19th and early 20th century considered to be their doorway to the great world that waited 'round the bend.
The depot has been restored to its authentic, turn-of-the-century look both inside and out. The depot holds original railroad equipment and memorabilia for viewing.
In one portion of the building, the Model Railroad Club displays an HO-scale model railroad system depicting the Southern Pacific Railroad line from Burbank to Port Hueneme.
Group tours are available by calling (805) 581-3462.
The depot is in Santa Susana Park, 6503 Katherine Road and is open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The park has a family picnic complete with a children's playground and a softball field.
The Rancho Simi Foundation has a new website with information about the history, a historical time line and pictures of the depot.
The Santa Susana Railroad Historical Society has information on the train club with pictures, a club discussion page and more.
Both sites may be accessed at www.santasusanadepot.org.
The society also has a club store to buy clothing at www.cafepress.com/ssrhs.
Two rooms at the depot are available for meetings. For room costs and availability, call (805) 584-4400.
The Rancho Simi Foundation is a nonprofit organization created by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District to assist in providing programs and services to district residents. Volunteers are always needed to help run the Santa Susana Railroad Depot and Museum.
