Chili cookoff approaches

The Knights of Columbus, Simi Valley Council No. 5803, will present the 19th annual Chili Cook Off and Car Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sun., June 11 at St. Rose of Lima School, 1305 Royal Ave. in Simi Valley.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6 to 12, seniors and disabled. Chili taste tickets are 50 cents each. Overflow parking is permitted across the street at Royal High School.

Cooks in this International Chili Society-sanctioned event will be competing for the Best Chili award plus $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. The first place winner will be eligible for the World's Championship Chili Cook Off regional semifinals later this summer. The Peoples Choice winners will receive cash awards and trophies. The top finishers can compete for Best Booth and Best Showmanship. Entry requirements for ICS

chili cooks is a minimum of five gallons of People's Choice Chili. Non-ICS cooks will also pay a $42 entry fee. Chili cooking will start at noon, with judging at 4 p.m.

The car show has 15 categories for classic, custom, street rods, muscle, sport, trucks and special interest vehicles. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to all category winners, including Best of Show. Entry fee is $20 until Sat., May 27 and $25 thereafter. Pre-registration is encourages since entry is limited to 100 vehicles. Awards will be presented around 2:30 p.m.

New to the show are four categories for motorcycles: custom Harley, chopper/pro-street, touring/bagger and old school.

Family fun will include rides, rock climbing wall, moon walk, water balloon slingshots, arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, the Irish Clown, Royal High cheerleaders, a dunk tank, and live music by Sour Cream & Jive.

Proceeds from the event will assist the Knights of Columbus in their charitable work.
