Traffic signal planned for Tapo and Walnut

Drivers soon may be stopping at a new traffic light at Tapo and Walnut streets.

The city council approved replacing the four-way stop sign at the intersection with a traffic signal last week.

Last year, the city applied for a $140,000 Caltrans grant, which would have paid for nearly all the construction costs. However, skyrocketing prices have pushed costs to an estimated $250,000.

"But you never can know (exactly) until you send it out to bid," said Ron Fuchiwaki, assistant director of public works.

The city has yet to hear if it will receive the grant; word from the state is expected in the next few weeks. The city, however, plans to install the signal whether it gets the grant or not once the 2006-07 budget is approved by the council in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the council asked city staff to have Neighborhood Councils Nos. 2 and 3 give input on whether a stop sign or perhaps a traffic light should be installed at Coastal Oak Drive and Sequoia Avenue.

The city has received numerous complaints about speeders and other driving dangers from residents who live south of Royal Avenue near Sequoia Avenue. A traffic study that was completed last year concluded that conditions didn't meet the criteria for a sign or signal.

The council could direct that one be installed.
