The city council last week rejected all four construction bids on a project to renovate the Department of Motor Vehicles building because two of them arrived incomplete.

The city agreed last year to share remodeling costs with the state on the 18-year-old, 7,000square-foot DMV building, located at 3855-D Alamo St., adjacent to city hall. The DMV will close during the 45-day construction period.

"Nothing has changed," said Daniel Paranick, deputy city manager. "We're just going through the process (again)."

The renovation will include a coat of paint inside and outside, new carpeting, and modifications made to the restrooms, drinking fountains and parking lot so the building is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city sent the project to bid earlier this year. However, the two lowest proposals were missing critical components, and the thirdhighest bid was $40,000 more than the lowest offer, according to a city report. State representatives asked the city to rebid the project.

This latest bidding period is scheduled to run from April 3 through June 5, with the contract expected to be awarded at the June 5 city council meeting and work on the 45-day project to begin Sept. 11.

Paranick said construction generally slows down in the fall and the city may get more responses this time.
