The bickering and bitterness that plagued CHS in '05 has been replaced by grit and determination. Calabasas is, in essence, beginning to show the personality of its head coach, former major leaguer Bret Saberhagen.
Anchoring the Coyote pitching staff will be Daniel Berlind, a hardthrowing right-hander who's headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and junior Greg Waxler, the crafty lefthander. Will Chapman, who starts in left field, and Chris Notti, the starting first baseman, will also spend time on the mound, as will Andy Singer.
Alex Kurland works as the team's No. 1 catcher. Kurland's considered a legitimate college prospect. Noland Schneiderman takes over at second base, with heavy-hitting Justin Harris at third. Miles Silverstein provides a nice glove at shortstop.
Patrolling the outfield will be Eric Ammon in center, Greg Selarz in right and Chapman in left. Josh Cudworth and Ryan Solon will also be versatile players in the outfield. Max Foumberg and Andrew Gordon can play multiple positions in the infield.
Swinging a big stick in the designated hitter's role will be Adam Dong. Dong, a backup catcher, can really put a charge into the baseball when he gets a hold of his pitch. Head coach Bret Saberhagen says: "It's a better attitude this year. Last year, we were arguing and fighting and nobody was on the same page. We didn't play as a team, it was a bunch of individuals out there. But they're starting to get it. We're not completely there as a team yet, but it's good to see them coming along."
