Police now receiving 911 cell calls

2006-01-27 / Community

The Simi Valley Police Department Communications Center began receiving wireless 911 calls on Jan. 19.

Up to this time, the California Highway Patrol Communications Centers throughout California answered the millions of wireless 911 calls, resulting in busy signals and extended wait times. CHP would initially receive 911 calls for Simi Valley and then transfer them to the police department.

The intent is now for the police department to handle 911 cellular phone calls from the outset to provide more efficient and timely service.

Cellular calls made from the 118 Freeway would still be received first by CHP.

Recent technology has enabled some wireless carriers to enhance their global positioning equipment to transmit latitude and longitudinal information on 911 calls. Such information will be useful to the police department dispatcher to determine the location of the emergency and quickly dispatch the appropriate resources.

Citizens are reminded to use 911 only for a life-threatening emergency or a crime in progress.

Persons requiring non-emergency assistance can still reach the Simi Valley Police Department at (805) 583-6950.
