Film ‘Luther,’ presentation of hymns scheduled at CLU As part of the “November Reformation Today” series, California Lutheran University will screen the movie “Luther” at 7:30 p.m. Tues., Nov. 1 in Samuelson Chapel on the campus at 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks. Eric Gill directed this 2004 movie about the life of Martin Luther starring Joseph Fiennes and Peter Ustinov. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion led by Dr. Guy Erwin, a professor of history and religion. Also participating in the panel are Dr. Beverly Kelley, a professor of communication, and the Rev. Scott Maxwell-Doherty, a campus pastor. Additionally, as part of the “November Reformation Today” series, CLU will host a musical presentation of hymns at 7:30 p.m. Tues., Nov. 8 in Samuelson Chapel. The “Lutherans Sing” program will feature Madeleine Marshall, Ph.D. Dr. Marshall directs a musical survey from the 16th-century hymns of Luther to the later work of Paul Gerhardt and the Moravians. J. S. Bach’s contributions and those of later masters lead up to a sampler of contemporary church music featuring Ivar Hillesland, music director of Contemporary Worship at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Santa Monica. Marshall is Senior Fellow at CLU’s Segerhammar Center for Faith and Culture and a member of the religion faculty. She has written and translated dozens of hymns for publication in many hymnals and served as an editorial adviser to the ELCA Renewing Worship project. Author of numerous articles and books on congregational song considered as poetry, she is editor of the new journal Religion and Culture: A Western Review, published by the Segerhammar Center.
