Parents, educators, and students attended the Simi Valley Unified School District Board of Education meeting held Sept. 13 in the city council chamber to start the new school year.

Board members who participated in first day of school activities shared their experiences. Each applauded the hard work of administrators, teachers, parents, and children.

School Board President Janice DiFatta, Trustee Debbie Sandland and Superintendent Kathryn Scroggin visited campuses on opening day.

“In all cases, what we saw were students actively engaged in learning,” said Scroggin. “We really could feel that special kind of energy that marks the opening of a new year.”

The superintendent’s report highlighted other recent accomplishments. “Enrollment came in slightly higher than what we had projected,” said Scroggin. “We have 21,618 regular and special education students enrolled.

“Additionally, the first PTA Council meeting was held at Simi Elementary on Sept. 12, marking the school’s 80th birthday,” said Scroggin. “Back-To-School Nights are also in full swing during the month of September all around our city.”

The Associated Student Body presidents from each of Simi Valley’s public high schools were also present. Monica Espinoza, 17, of Royal; Sophie Holman, 17, of Santa Susana; Linsey Mead, 17, of Simi Valley; and Kirsten Marshall, 17, from Apollo have all been chosen as this year’s student representatives to the board.

They will serve as delegates to bring important student issues before the board for consideration and to deliver status reports on each of the campuses.
