Theater on High Street to present free live ‘radio comedy’

2005-10-07 / On The Town

Headlining a roster of veteran radio drama actors, Anne Lockhart joins the cast of “Buddy Shell; Metaphysical Private Investigator,” in a free performance at Moorpark’s Theater on High Street at 8 p.m. Fri., Oct. 21.

The free performance was originally conceived as a members-only event, but then was opened up to the public as a “thank you” from the High Street Theater Foundation. The foundation wanted to give something back to the community for the support they received last week at their Night of Vaudeville presentation, which ran during Moorpark’s Country Days events.

The radio comedy presentation of “Buddy Shell; M.P.I.” is about a private eye with interests in Wiccan white magic and community theater. This adventure moves at lightning pace. Characters include vampire King Legholtz; Buddy’s familiar, Miles, an albino myna bird; Buddy’s operative, Mickey Gold, a 45-year-old paper boy; CIA agents; and a number of wacky friends and foes.

Producer Greg Pineda of Westlake Village’s Hollywood Music Store said, “When writers Terry Miles and Steve Carlson came to me with this idea for a live radio comedy performance, I jumped on it. I’ve been working with these lunatics for over 20 years, and they keep me laughing all the way to the bank.”

The audience is invited to enjoy the show, and if the project goes over as well as all hope, it will be offered to KCLU— 88.3FM––to run on Halloween night. KCLU has broadcast 22 episodes of “Buddy Shell; M.P.I.” in the past, as well as other Carlson/Miles/Lockhart projects. Those include their star-studded production of “War of the Worlds” in 1998 in league with the Santa Susana Radio Repertory Company, which won the group the Ventura County Reporter Award for best drama that season.

The Theater on High Street, now owned by the city of Moorpark, is located at 45 E. High Street in the historic downtown area. Parking is available directly across the street, in the lot between Maria’s Family Restaurant and the Bar-B-Que Joint.
