Simi resident arrested on suspicion of arson, trespassing
On Mon., Oct. 3, Simi Valley resident Francisco Ortiz, 25, was arrested on suspicion of arson, trespassing, resisting a police officer and being under the influence of drugs.
At about 12:45 p.m., Simi Valley police officers noticed smoke in the hills along the southeast border of Simi Valley. Ortiz had been seen walking in the vicinity of the fire. A department of forestry helicopter transported a police officer to the location where Ortiz had been.
The officer then attempted to detain Ortiz, who became combative and was arrested after a brief struggle. Ortiz was taken to the Simi Valley Hospital for medical treatment because it appeared that he was on drugs. During the investigation, a cigarette lighter was found on OrtizVentura County Fire Departmeninvestigators said the cause of the fire appeared to be arson.
Ortiz was booked into the Ventura County Jail.
