Community of Christ offers wide array of service
The Community of Christ at 3701 Alamo St., Simi Valley, announces its mission to proclaim Jesus Christ and promote communities of joy, hope, love and peace.
Its service to the community includes a Children’s Peace Pavilion located in the church’s World Headquarters complex in Independence, Missouri. The Pavilion was established in 1995 by the church as a gift to the children of the world and features hands-on exhibits to teach children about the concepts of peace. More than 1,000 visitors arrive each year.
The church is a national partner in support of Call to Renewal, a Christian-based interfaith federation dedicated "to overcome poverty, dismantle racism, promote healthier families and supportive communities, and reassert the dignity of each human life." Leaders signed the organization’s Covenant to Overcome Poverty. The church supports a full-time event planner for the organization’s office in Washington, D.C.
The Community of Christ was legally organized on April 6, 1830 in Fayette, New York. The death of church founder Joseph Smith, Jr. in 1844 caused the church to disperse into several groups. Joseph Smith III succeeded his father and was ordained prophet-president of the church on April 6, 1860. The church has about 250,000 members in over 50 countries.
The church recognizes three books of scripture: the Holy Scriptures (the Bible), Book of Mormon (a secondary testimony of Jesus Christ) and the Doctrine and Covenants.
