Kicking their heels up in Moorpark

The cast from 'Joy of Legs'
Imagine the razzle-dazzle of "Chicago" right here on High Street. The sequins, the long limbs, the neat derrières made firm by years at the ballet barre.
Picture a Parisian-inspired cabaret act in the innocent times before the Germans stormed the capital. The torch songs, the tap and ballroom numbers, the snappy patter of the club’s emcee.
"La Joie Des Jambes" (The Joy of Legs), which opens next weekend at Theater on High Street in downtown Moorpark, is all that without the smoke and sour bar patrons. The musical revue, which brings the can-can, a Charlie Chaplin routine and even a bit of burlesque to the venue’s intimate setting, is the brainchild of Marissa Moses, the show’s director and choreographer, and Raleigh Campbell, manager of Theater on High.
"I’ve always loved musicals," Moses said. "It’s how entertainment used to be. I wanted to bring that vintage feeling to the show."
The 21-year-old Moorpark College dance major has assembled a fresh and fit ensemble of performers, including college students Ryan Garda, Gina Greshner, Gavin Harry, Libby Martin, Jeff Newman and Matt Rawles.
Moses and Harry, a gymnast and ballroom pro, stand out among the troupe.
Campbell, who hoofs the whimsical Chaplin number, also serves as musical director. The live "Legs" band includes locals Steve Schneider on piano, banjo and horn; Ammon Campbell on drums; Matthew States on lead guitar; Michael Westheimer on rhythm guitar and Jason Retana on bass.
Musical selections range from France’s Golden Age to the present and include Louis Armstrong’s "It’s Been a Long, Long Time," Fred Astaire’s "Puttin’ on the Ritz," "Let Us Entertain you" from the play "Gypsy" and Madonna’s "Hanky Panky." "La Joie des Jambes" performs Fri., Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. and Sat., Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. at Theater on High, 45 High Street, Moorpark.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for students and $12 for groups of five or more. For information, call (805) 766-8677.
