Group encouraging new artists
The Simi Valley Art Association, which began over 20 years ago, lay dormant for a number of years in the 1990s. But the association, which was revived five years ago, is growing again and wants to be known as a strong force in a city often overlooked for its art.
The association encourages up-and-coming artists by handing out scholarships. In January, they gave $1,500 in art scholarships to students at Simi Valley and Royal high schools.
Recently, the association hosted "The Days of Summer" art competition at the Simi Valley Library, which was a huge hit with the public, said Cecelia McRoberts, association president.
On June 18, the association will host an art demonstration at the Simi Valley Library by the award-winning artist Mary Ulrich, who will demonstrate colored pencil art techniques. The event is open to the public.
Contact the association at (805) 584-1850 for more information and their monthly meeting times.
