A teenage boy accused in the stabbing death of his own mother during an afternoon gathering at the family’s Simi Valley home will be tried as an adult, officials have said. The incident occured just a week before Mother’s Day.

At about 4 p.m. on May 1, family members called 911 to summon help. Simi Valley Police were dispatched to the 1600 block of Blackwell Drive where Reina Amico, 41, was found lying on the bathroom floor with multiple stab wounds.

Amico was rushed to Simi Valley hospital where she later died.

The victim’s son, Jason Leon Amico, 15, fled the scene in the family car, officials said. According to Sgt. Joseph May of the Simi Valley Police Department, relatives told police that the boy might be headed to the home of another family member in Van Nuys.

Los Angeles Police secured the area around the Van Nuys home until a special operations unit from Simi Valley arrived, May said. Not long after Simi officers relieved the LAPD, Jason Amico was taken into custody without incident.

The teen was transported to Ventura County Juvenile Hall and will not be released to family members, officials said.

According to May, detectives conducted an investigation of the crime scene until after midnight on the day of the incident. The knife that is believed to be the murder weapon was recovered at the scene, he said.

At a hearing Tuesday in Ventura County Superior Court, Amico, was charged with murder with an enhancement for use of the knife. Judge Ronald Purnell continued the boy’s arraignment to May 18.

"The planning of the crime was a factor in our decision to charge him as an adult," said Senior Deputy District Attorney Stacy Ratner, prosecutor.

"This is an extremely serious crime," the Ratner said. "A woman is dead, a son is in jail and an entire family is in crisis."

Bail was not set, but could be sought by the defense at a later date, Ratner said. Deputy Public Defender Randy Tucker represented Amico at the hearing.

Jason Amico is a sophomore at Royal High School. Principal Bob La Belle could not be reached for comment and no motive for the stabbing has been given.

Dennis Carter, director of student support services for the Simi Valley Unified School District, said the district has a grief response policy that deals with the death of a teacher, student or sibling. But to Carter’s knowledge, no grief counselors or clergy were required at the high school.

Amico was laid to rest Tuesday morning at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park in Simi Valley. Rabbi Steven Jacobs of Temple Kol Tikvah in Woodland Hills officiated at the private funeral service for family and close friends.

"She was a good wife and a good mother," Jacobs said.

"You can’t say easy words and easy phrases. The events are Biblical in nature. When family members turn against one another, it is a sacrifice of great dimension."
