‘Unlikely heroes’ to be honored at Jewish Federation benefit

The Jewish Federation of Ventura County will host "The Spirit of Tolerance Benefit" at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., May 20 at Channel Islands Cinema, 101 W. Gonzales Road, Oxnard. Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Charles Weis, PhD, will be honored with the "Champion of Tolerance" award.

A screening of "Unlikely Heroes" will be presented. This special preview is in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the federation’s Teaching Tolerance Program, which has sent more than 30,000 eighth-grade students from Ventura County to the Museum of Tolerance.

Narrated by actor Ben Kingsley, "Unlikely Heroes" highlights seven ordinary people who did extraordinary deeds during the most desperate days of the Holocaust. The film was produced and written by Rabbi Marvin Hier and Richard Trank, who also directed. Trank will attend the event.
