The Encore show choir and Jazz Ensemble from Grace Brethren High School in Simi Valley recently earned two first place trophies, two gold medals and one silver medal as they competed in New York City against high school choirs from across North America. Thirty-three students, faculty members and parent chaperones spent four-and-a-half days there, rehearsing with Broadway professionals, performing, visiting the sites and competing.

Encore took the first place trophy for Best Show Choir and a silver medal for vocalization. Eleventh grader Sharon Ports received the gold medal for Best Vocal Competitor. The Jazz Ensemble received first place for Best Jazz Choir and also received a gold medal for vocalization.

During their visit, Sonrise Christian Fellowship Senior Pastor Stan Wilson led the group in worship and the choirs sang at the Ground Zero site.

The choirs are currently preparing for their annual spring concert slated for 7 p.m. Sun., May 2 at Grace Brethren Church. For more information, call the school office at (805) 522-4667.
