Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center will rock this month

2004-03-05 / On The Town

The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center will be rocking the roof this month with productions of the classic rock opera "Tommy" and "The Rocky Horror Show" at the center, 3050 Los Angeles Ave., Simi Valley. Due to the mature nature of the material, neither production is recommended for children 14 and under.

The Who’s "Tommy" was a pioneering musical work created by the band that produced many memorable songs and was later transformed into a "thrilling, epic" work for the stage. The music and lyrics are by The Who’s Pete Townshend and "Tommy" was adapted for the stage from the original album by Townshend and Des McAnuff.

This production is presented by Actors Repertory Theatre of Simi. The character of Tommy, played in this production by three actors of varying ages, finds release from a trauma-induced state of catatonia through his prowess at pinball, eventually rising to become a messianic hero to disaffected youth. A live orchestra will accompany the performance.

"Tommy" will continue through Sun., March 28. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with 2 p.m. Sunday matinee performances.

Richard O’Brien’s "The Rocky Horror Show—Live" will be presented for three "Midnight Madness" performances on Fridays, March 12, 19 and 26. The show is famous for being that "weird, wacky, wild romp of a rock ’n’ roll musical . . .campy to the hilt." The production will feature a live orchestra, outrageous costumes, sets and lighting effects.

Director Fred Helsel encourages audience participation but requests a few ground rules and common etiquette to maintain order and a safe experience for all theatre goers and performers. The only audience "props" allowed for the show are those available at the theater that evening. "Audience participation kits" will be available for purchase for a nominal fee from cast members prior to the beginning of the show.

Tickets for either production range from $15 to $18 and are available by calling the box office at (805) 583-7900.
