Woman’s ‘Dining 4 Dollars’ fundraiser helps fight M.S.
Donations to help pay for Simi Valley woman’s expensive medications
Linda Martins is passionate about helping people afflicted with multiple sclerosis.
Four years ago, the Simi Valley resident started her own fundraiser, Dining 4 Dollars. When customers pay for their meal at a local restaurant, 20 percent is donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. On March 9, Acapulco Mexican Restaurant Y Cantina in Simi Valley will host the event from 3 to 10 p.m.
"I want to see the restaurant packed to the rafters," Martins said.
About 1,000 people in Ventura County are afflicted with the neurological disease, which can cause blurred vision, tremors, paralysis, and blindness.
Allison Leonard, a spokesperson for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said Martins’ efforts have raised nearly $2,000 since 1998.
"What Linda has raised over the years is the equivalent to 40 people with multiple sclerosis attending a series of yoga classes," Leonard said.
The disease robs people of balance and coordination, but yoga can help restore some of it, she said.
Martins’ fervor has rubbed off on others.
Her employer will match the funds she raises with a donation, and a radio station has donated air-time to promote the event. Martins said the money can help patients pay for expensive medication. Just one drug costs $1,000 for a month’s supply, she said.
