KCLU adds ‘Science Friday’ to NPR programming lineup

KCLU-FM recently added to its lineup the National Public Radio program "Science Friday," hosted by veteran science journalist Ira Flatow. The program will air each Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. on 88.3 FM in Ventura County and 102.3 FM in Santa Barbara County.

Each week, Flatow and studio guests will explore science-related topics on everything from subatomic particles and the human genome to the Internet and earthquakes. Flatow offers listeners the chance to hear from the people whose work influences their daily lives.

"Our listeners have been telling us that they are interested in expanded coverage of science and technology," said Jim Rondeau, KCLU’s director of operations and programming. "‘Science Friday’ is a fascinating program, and we are pleased to be able to provide it for our listeners."

Flatow’s interest in things scientific began in boyhood when he almost burned down his mother’s bathroom trying to re-create a biology class experiment. "I was the proverbial kid who spent hours in the basement experimenting with electronic gizmos and then entering them in high school science fairs," Flatow said. Mixing his passion for science with a tendency toward being "a bit of a ham," Flatow describes himself as "an educated layman with a tremendous desire to communicate his enthusiasm for science and discovery."

Flatow’s numerous network TV credits include six years as host and writer for the Emmy Award-winning "Newton’s Apple" on PBS and many years as a science reporter for CBS’ "This Morning" and "PM Magazine." He recently wrote, produced and hosted the award-winning PBS documentary "Transistorized!" about the history of the transistor.

KCLU is presented as a community service of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
